Alumni: Varsity soccer player and Math & Computing major
Liz (Aalbue) Schafhauser
After attending Greenhouse for high school (2013-17), Liz Schafhauser played varsity soccer in college, while getting her degree in Math and Computing.
Greenhouse greatly impacted my preparedness for life as I graduated high school. I left equipped with the necessary skills and tools for success at the collegiate level.
From a practical standpoint, I was able to tackle difficult projects, papers, blog posts, and presentations with confidence and efficiency. My critical thinking skills became exponentially stronger at Greenhouse both through our weekly assignments, such as our harkness discussions, and through our long-term assignments, like the final thesis paper in literature class. In addition, Greenhouse's weekly class schedule translated seamlessly to my collegiate rhythm of life, especially as I juggled both my academic and soccer schedules. Greenhouse allowed me to practice prioritizing school work and working ahead with busy schedules, an invaluable competency for staying on top of collegiate work.
Even more important than my preparedness for school, Greenhouse provided the perfect environment for me to grow in my faith.
When I first joined Greenhouse, I did not fully understand what it means to be a follower of Jesus. I grew up in a Christian home and had collected head knowledge regarding Jesus and the Bible, but did not make the connection that Jesus desires a personal relationship with me. My very first assignment for literature class was to write up my testimony, and I had to ask Mrs. Gottlieb what a testimony was. (Somehow, I had never heard the term!). It was then that I decided to recommit my life to the Lord.
My first year at Greenhouse marked the beginning of my beautiful and imperfect journey of growing closer to my Heavenly Father. I will be forever grateful for this!
