Alumni: Middle school at Greenhouse inspired me to learn
Betsy (Jones) Teevans
Spending her middle school years at Greenhouse nurtured Betsy Teevans’ creativity and encouraged her to think outside the box.
Greenhouse had a profound impact on my education. Transitioning from a private Christian school to Greenhouse in 5th grade, I completed Logic I and continued through 8th grade, finishing Logic II. For four years, Greenhouse was an excellent fit for my schooling experience.
The classical education approach at Greenhouse made a significant impression on me. Learning through historical eras provided a rich, interconnected understanding of various subjects, all tied to the same time period. This method not only deepened my knowledge but also nurtured my creativity and encouraged me to think outside the box.
Some of my most cherished memories were in the art classroom with Ms. Laura Tabbut and my friends, where we created projects like Guernica, woolen purses in sculpture class, and the Renaissance tapestry. Greenhouse also introduced me to the art of recitation, a completely new experience that involved memorization and performance, something I had not encountered in my previous school.
The small class sizes and hands-on learning environment were transformative for me as a middle school student. They sparked my curiosity and passion for learning, especially in unique subjects like historical eras and even Latin.
Greenhouse truly laid the foundation for a lifelong love of learning, inspiring in me a deep desire to travel the world and experience these art and historic masterpieces firsthand.
Seeing these treasures in person would bring the lessons of my middle school years to life, creating an even stronger connection to the history and creativity I studied.
